Grant Green played a Gibson ES for part of his career. The thing that saved the Epiphone Casino from the fate of obscurity and bad re-issues was the Beatles.

Paul McCartney purchased an Epiphone Casino in John and George later each bought Casinos in John and George played Casinos as their main instrument during their tour.

It was actually all the hype about the Beatles and the Casino which kept me from trying the guitar for years.

Eventually I tried a Casino and loved it the first time I played it. Soon after that I started to notice how often I found blues guitarists playing an ES at blues concerts I attended.

I purchased one of the overseas made Casinos and plan on keeping even as I consider reducing my guitar collection by half. The ES never had a huge rock star or a large number of rock stars play the instrument.

Something different and unusual. Stumbled on this site while searching for the guitar plans for the ES I have to say that you failed to mention how, as far as anyone can tell, the recent Gibson ES is practically an exact reissue of the axe Grant Green played for part of his career with perhaps slight improvements regardless of whether or not it reflect your preferred run of the model.

For the price point the Epi is nice but the differences are still numerous. Sure, a million Epi owners would stick up for their guitar but the fact remains the two have some definite differences.

The weight, finish, wood choice, binding and especially this: Also, never played one but the Heritage H looks superb.

Once upon a time I lusted after a Gibson ES My irritation with Gibson has nothing to do with quality. The equivalent model of any Epiphone is not going to have the same quality as the Gibson.

I can no longer afford a Gibson even if they reissued a design I wanted. I am quite happy with my Korean made Casino. But I am well aware of the many small differences that make any superior to the quality of my Casino.

Professional musicians will likely think it does. The rest of us — it depends on our finances and what we are looking for. My Casino serves me just fine.

And the money I saved went to buying other guitars. Thank you again for the comments. You definitely added details and considerations that my original post was lacking.

This is when you consider that one can change out everything else. Put on Kluson tuners, change out the pots and electronics, keep the bridge and replace the pickups.

I put Lollar classic style pickups with fewer winds on this Chinese made Casino and better electronics.

It is now my go too guitar. To get to the point. Not having an ES to compare it too all I can say is that fit and finish, even the type and selection of wood can be over rated.

If there are no major flaws in fit and finish and if the wood has good resonance as Hooker would seem to think with the ES then an Epi will do the job as well as any Gibson.

One could always have the guitar gone over by a Luthier or do it oneself to correct fret, nut and bridge problems if there were any to begin with on a particular guitar.

The original Casinos had five ply birch and maple as dose some of the more expensive Casinos. One hears different views on the fit and finish of Korean, Japanese and Chinese Casinos but my Chinese made is impeccable in finish.

Maybe I was just lucky. I would like to know. The test for me was how it sounded without plugging it in. It is so good that I sometimes think I am using one of my acoustics.

It is said that if a hollow body resonates well unplugged it will sound as good plugged. The Lollars and electronics have made a stark difference.

So that might be a necessary thing to do. So to make a long story short, my advice is to quit beating yourself up about whether to by an ES or Casino.

If you are a musician you want a guitar that sounds and plays well. The Casino is that guitar. It also has a cache that the ES could only wish to have.

It was the most used guitar by the greatest rock band in history and everyone knows it. I just looked at http: He stated that the construction is 3 ply as many of the Casinos are.

It is maple, poplar, maple which imitates the original ES of the late 50s. I would then assume that the early Casinos were also 3 ply and of maple, poplar, maple.

Why would the inferior Epiphone have 5 ply construction. The only thing I can think of is it is not the same guitar but rather a modern upgrade.

If that is the case then the standard Casino should do the job with its 3 ply construction. The Elitist my be a way of increasing revenues from the popular Casino market.

Guitar manufacturing and marketing is a balancing act and guessing game. They need to balance the price people are willing to pay for a specific guitar vs.

Add to Wish List. Pick Up in Store. Ever since The Beatles purchased three Casinos back in , this hollow Epi model has taken on a life of its own.

Equipped with two, vintage P single-coil pickups, the Casino still delivers those Beatlesque tones at a price every player can afford.

Product Experience I've tried it. Closest Store Burlington, Ontario. My friend recently purchased this guitar. When he first showed me and I played it, it sounded nice.

The set up really wasn't great and the hardware looked kinda cheap. You could tell the frets weren't very smooth as the strings would almost grind against them during bends.

I didn't want to say anything to him because he was pretty excited about it. The hardware's brand new look did not last a week and began showing signs of wear.

Because of all the negative things I've said so far I will say in favour of the guitar that it sounded reasonably nice and had reasonable tuning stability.

I just can't see how they can justify that kind of price and would really hope that this was just a "bad one.

Product Experience I own it. Closest Store Sudbury, Ontario. Wanted a used one. Hooked up with the Courtnay BC shop. They said they had a nice one.

They packed it and sent it to The Soo by Purolator.

I wonder where the Coupe lies regarding specs? Aug 4, 6. Aug 4, 7. Aug 4, 8. Aug 4, 9. Here's my Coupe that I recently picked up.

It's very light weight - which for me is a big plus. It is a fairly bright guitar acoustically. Little Robert , Aug 4, Aug 4, I've always liked the size and shape of a style guitar - I've played them since I was a teenager and I certainly don't find them too big or uncomfortable.

The size feels a bit awkward and cramped in comparison. I think it's largely down to what feels familiar: Jayyj , Aug 4, Little Robert likes this. There was a coupe at the local GC I really liked.

I went home and thought about it; went back to get it, and it was gone. Robert , Aug 4, I purchased one of the overseas made Casinos and plan on keeping even as I consider reducing my guitar collection by half.

If you are a musician you want a guitar that sounds and plays well. The Casino is that guitar. They said they had a nice one.

They packed it and sent it to The Soo by Purolator. Arrived in 5 days. It arrived in perfect condition. Serial number shows it was made in Korea in April The craftsmanship is high quality.

The playability is very comfortable, natural and smooth. It is a well built guitar with great P pickups spank and sparkle and a fast neck a bit like the old Hags.

Even though used, the fit and finish quality is spot on. Lightweight of course as it is a fully hollow-body build.

The bridge is set in place and will not slide on ya. The vintage vibe is complete with an aged tint to the binding and selector, Kluson style tuners easy and smooth , gold top-hat style knobs with metal stop markers.

It just feels so darn good to play. You don't have to live in the major centers to get good deals and good service. When are you coming to The Soo?
